About The Block Australian
Originally, the show used to have contestants who had previous experience in renovating. They had to refurbish apartment blocks in a budget of A$40,000. The apartments were then sold at auction, with each couple keeping any profit made above a set reserve price and the couple with the highest profit winning a A$100,000 prize. The format today is same as it was originally, just that the number of couple has increased from four to five. Also, the show has moved from Sydney to Melbourne region and the budget has been increased from the previous limit.
The first season of the show was filmed at Bondi and the second at Manly. Initially, the show was hosted by Australian gardening guru Jamie Durie.
The show ran for two consecutive seasons in 2003 and 2004, but then did not telecast for six years.
The Nine Network renewed The Block after a six-year gap, with a third season commenced airing on 22 September 2010. However, Jamie durie was replaced by renowned personality and builder Scott Cam. The third season was shot in Vaucluse, in the vicinity of Sydney.
Breaking the previous norms of the show, the fourth season was filmed in four side-by-side houses as opposed to an apartment block of four. This season was shot in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, Victoria on Cameron Street. Again a famous TV star, Shelley Craft was called to join Scott Cam in hosting.
Season five then renewed in April 2012 which retained the four separate houses format. Season five is again set in Melbourne, on Dorcas Street, and is set in four adjacent multi-storey town houses. Season six returned to Sydney, in Bondi, for the tenth year anniversary, this was the last season that involved renovating houses, as from its seventh season, the contestants have renovated rundown apartment blocks, rundown buildings and former hotel buildings.
Earlier, till three seasons, the show used to be telecasted weekly. The first season ran for 13 weeks, second for 26 and third for 9 weeks.
The format though changed after that. Now for season four, five and six, the show was aired on every weeknight including Sundays and used the tagline “7’OBlock Weeknights,”. Each of these seasons ran for a period of 8 weeks. However, in season 7, the 7’OBlock tagline only occurred on Sundays and the show used to air at 7:30 on weekdays.
For every season, the show requires new sponsors. Though the prime sponsors remain Mitre 10, Suzuki, The Good Guys, Domain & Swisse.
All the seasons of the show were a great hit. They topped the viewer’s ratings list and was running ahead of its contemporaries like Glee on Network Ten and Border Security on the Seven Network.
Season three was successful in all demographics and was also the second most-watched program of the week. The show had run 13 successful seasons and there is still more to come.
